Pop Quiz (Which Emergent leader said this?)
Ok, I used to be a teacher so you’ll have to excuse me with the title. I want to know which emergent leader said this quote. If you get it right, well you’ll have the profound privilege of being right. Is he or she espousing a social gospel?
…share your food with the hungry, and…provide the poor wanderer with shelter–when you see the naked,…clothe them…then your will light will be as bright as the dawn and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will before you and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. If you spend yourself on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like midday. The LORD will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun scorched land and will strengthen your frame.

Clearly, this individual has bought into a social gospel. It sounds to me like he’s teaching salvation by works - “then your righteousness will go before you”. Your righteousness! Everyone who’s truly saved knows we can’t have righteousness on our own.
It’s so sad to see another young person buy into the neo-liberal, neo-pagan, neo-Roman Emergent cult of Mr. Anti-Christ-himself Brian McLaren…

Isaiah 58:
1″Cry aloud; do not hold back;
lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.
2 Yet they seek me daily
and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that did righteousness
and did not forsake the judgment of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments;
they delight to draw near to God.
3 ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,
and oppress all your workers.
4Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day
will not make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I choose,
a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and a day acceptable to the LORD?
6″Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?
7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him,
and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you;
the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
9Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,
10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry
and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness
and your gloom be as the noonday.
11And the LORD will guide you continually
and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in.
13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath,
from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
and call the Sabbath a delight
and the holy day of the LORD honorable;
if you honor it, not going your own ways,
or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;
14then you shall take delight in the LORD,
and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
I thought I would clarify your post within the only context that matters, the Scriptures themselves.
No emergent, let alone you guys, would ever “declare to His people their transgressions”
Therefore the author quoted must be an odm’er.
I will guarantee the odm types do more “good works” than any of you.
The ecm/emrgent purpose driven folk have their reward.
Matthew 6:
1″Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Or do I have to be a pharisee to understand this passage?

This reminds me of that joke about the kid in Sunday school who was asked, “What is grey and has a big bushy tail.”
Since the boy was there to learn about Jesus and most of the answers had been “Jesus”…
The boy said, “it sounds like a squirrel, but I will say it is Jesus.”
Yet, this time I will say it sounds a lot like Jesus, but I bet it is Brian McLaren or Tony Campolo… or worse Shane Claiborne!

Pretty sure Nathanael got it right, although I’m not sure what translation that is.
February 28th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Of course I’m right!
I think it must be the TNIV…that’s the version Joe’s INfamous (more than famous) pastor teaches from.

I can understand confronting men who say other religions have a “piece” of Jesus and are redeemed. I can understand confronting men who call sin OK. I can understand confronting men who preach a form of universalism.
But I cannot understand arguing over feeding the poor, etc., as a complimentary gospel role. I guess I don’t understand because I’m not hungry.

How am I supposed to keep up when you guys keep handing off the Mantle of Omniscience ™ to each other?
February 29th, 2008 at 2:21 am
Chris P,
So humbly stated…
I guarantee that not all that say Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Just sonething to think about.

I have a difficult time understanding how Chris P. leads worship (and it sounds very good, too) and can maintain such a caustic and self righteous tone. Usually musicians are much more tender hearted.

Eugene Peterson.
Yes.

I would agree on some level, however, that same case could be made for the “orthodox” and “ODM” crowd. The next time one of you guys publicly takes Ingrid to task I will bake a cake!
