Hell Freezes Over

Hell froze over this Monday when CRN reported something positive about an emerging church. They also didn’t point out that Mark Driscoll was the “cussing pastor”. Rumor has it that they’ve decided to forgive Driscoll and move on with their lives.

Pigs were seen flying through Claremont, NH as well.

I think the only reason they quoted Driscoll in a positive manner was to cut down Rob Bell et. al.

  2. Henry (Rick) Frueh Says:

That falls under the category of a “left handed compliment”.

  3. Chris L Says:

There’s nothing new in Driscoll’s lecture that hasn’t been refuted back when he first gave it at SBTSU last fall.

  4. Henry (Rick) Frueh Says:

On the flip side Driscoll was trumpeted by many emergents as innovative and thoughtful, but when he gave the lecture in question he is “refuted” as unreliable and divisive.

A man runs up braethlessly to a policeman and says:

“I just witnessed a bank robbery!”.

    “Really, where?”

“Down there at the First National Bank!”

“Thank you for your help”, as the policeman calls for backup on his radio. “By the way, did you get a look at the robber?”.

“Yes, it was your brother”, the man said to the policeman.

“You’re a liar!” replied the policeman.

That is sometimes how sources who we once liked changed because they say things we now don’t appreciate. So it is with Mark Driscoll who I still find “unfulfilling” but listened with interest to his perpective about men in his former emergent collection.

Actually, I still like Driscoll - I just think he’s chosen criticisms that, by his own admission, have never been confirmed by talking to Bell (like saying that Bell & MH-GR belong to EmergentVillage, when they do not)…

    But he cannot stand you!

“Bell & MH-GR belong to EmergentVillage, when they do not.” Indeed they do not, but they are considered by Tony Jones, national coordinator of Emergent Village as an important part of the “emergent church” as evidenced by this quote from Jones’ Wheaton College address:

In open source—also known as “scale free networks”—growth looks more like a non-hierarchical web, with hubs of potency that, in turn, foment new strands of growth.

Emergent Village surely stands as one such hub in the emergent church, as does Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Brian McLaren’s books, Scot McKnight’s “Jesus Creed” blog, and the theological writings of Stan Grenz, John Franke, LeRon Shults, NT Wright, Stanley Hauerwas, and Miroslav Volf.

All that snow must’ve taken someone’s internet access down. But I won’t name the scamp that I’m thinking of.

  9. Chris L Says:

    Let’s see:

    1) Bell and the church BOTH say “we’re not affiliated with the emergent church”.

    2) Mars Hill Bible Church has multiple differences from the general stereotype of “emergent church” (with its size/structure being the most organic, obvious one).

    3) Neither MHBC nor Bell belong to EmergentVillage…

Seems pretty clear, no matter who wishes they were in the ECM…
