Somewhere Between the Pharisees and the Herodians

Jeff Manion recently gave an excellent sermon at Mars Hill Bible Church called ‘Window Washing‘, which I have found quite applicable to the discussions we have been having of late, and to the basic theology of our site: Finding the Christ-honoring way which sits somethwere between the poles of phariseeism and hedonism - between legalism and looking no different from the world - between self-righteous sanctimony and lassez faire postmodernism.

This link should be good for the next 10 weeks or so…

Enjoy!

  1. inquisitor Says:

legalism is the belief that salvation can come by following the law.
I don’t know anyone who holds this belief, either the ODM fundies, or the Emergents. Can we name someone who holds this belief? NO.
So then why does the term legalism get thrown around so much?
It’s because those who practice holiness are erroneously labeled as such.

    The issue is not legalism.

    Yes it is.

It’s also legalism when you take your convictions or preferences and push them on another as an absolute sin/no sin situation. And then use your standard, YOUR standard, to judge another’s salvation. That then shows that you’re adding to Jesus blood. Sorry, but that’s the subtle fact of it. It’s so obvious.

I’m using “you” and “your” in the universal sense, so don’t take me the wrong way here.

    Joe

  3. Reverend Joe Martino Says:

Inquisitor, Did you even listen to the sermon? Secondly, would you admit that there is a difference between what people say they believe in theory and what they actually believe from their actions?

What a joke. You’ve got lots of watchdoggies who are willing to lie, slander, and launch personal insults at people but jumped all over us for not condemning the 7 words you can’t say on televsion.

Whatever word you want to use for that its contrary to holiness, no matter how much you want to insist its holiness.

  5. Julie Says:

Here’s Julie’s quick and handy summation of legalism:

“You’re wearing makeup? You whore of Babylon! To hell you’re headed!”

“You’re wearing pants? You whore of Babylon! To hell you’re headed!”

Now, I leave it up to you to decide whether this was directed to a man or woman, and the implications therein.
