Comments: Russ laments legalism with some folks he’s been debating (unnamed, though the clues seem to point to SoL), and the absence of grace and love in the pursuit of their version of truth.
Memorable Quotes:

Now their checklists aren’t written down but you’ll recognize them:

  • No dancing
  • No drinking
  • No smoking
  • Only hymns and gospel songs are acceptable forms of music
  • Nothing non-spiritual can be enjoyed
  • Movies are out (even Christian movies)
  • Drama is questionable
  • TV is out unless its tuned to the Christian channel (and then only an approved Christian channel because there are so many heretical and apostate channels on the air)
  • If the sermon does not include an alter call then it is questionable
  • Sermon series are questionable
  • If the pastor chooses to wear a casual shirt while preaching it’s questionable
  • Teens and young children should be in church with their parents instead of getting age-appropriate teaching.
  • If the church is “big” or not a house-church, you are meeting in the wrong place.
  • If you subject your kids to public school instead of private/home schooling, you dont’ love your children.

The list is waaaaaaaaay longer than that just from the short time I’ve been trying to interact with them.

Comments: Chris gives a proper contextual exegesis on one of Ken’s favorite (ab)used scriptures, dealing with Jesus’ authority.
Memorable Quotes:

The purpose of this is to lead the asker to find their own answer, rather than giving an answer to them. The theory goes like this “If I give you my answer to a question, it is my answer. If a different answer comes along that you like better, you give up nothing by disregarding my answer. However, if I ask you a question that leads you to discover the answer, it becomes your answer, and you are much more likely to retain it when faced with alternatives.

Comments: Todd examines two young vandals held up as fine upstanding examples by Slice for going Luther on their church and attaching some rather lame theses to the church door in response to them not getting their way.
Memorable Quotes:

Here’s a simple word picture: You’re hiking on a lovely wooded trail in the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. Your hike is going very well and as you’re soaking up the beauty of God’s creation you come across another hiker who has fallen and has broken his leg. He looks like he’s in pretty bad shape so you kneel down to help him. He tells you that he’s been on this trail for almost a full day now. He’s dragged himself this far, but he’s out of energy to go any further. He’s thirsty, hungry and exhausted, so you open up your water bottle to share with him – but before he drinks, you take some time to explain to him that if you hadn’t come, he would have died. Not just died, but died an awful, painful, lonely death and that nobody would have known or cared. He should appreciate this water, because without it, he would have suffered to an unimaginable degree. You then explain that water is essential for his future. If he wants to avoid future suffering, he should drink water again.
